'Empire Strikes Back' and More Iconic Films Preserved As American National Treasures
Iconic films including "The Empire Strikes Back", "The Exorcist" and "Saturday Night Fever" are to be preserved as American national treasures with an induction into the Library of Congress' National Film Registry.
Twenty five films have been selected to be stored in the national archives as part of an annual drive to preserve movies with artistic, cultural or historical significance. George Lucas' 1980 sci-fi sequel is among the 2010 inductees and will join the "Star Wars" film in the archive, while "Saturday Night Fever", starring a disco-dancing John Travolta, horror classic "The Exorcist", and political thriller "All the President's Men" also make the list.
A poignant addition to the archives this year is "Airplane!", just a month after the death of its star Leslie Nielsen, while "The Pink Panther" is also included. The film's writer/director Blake Edwards died earlier this month.

Michael Douglas to Receive Icon Award
Michael Douglas is set to receive a top honor at the upcoming Palm Springs International Film Festival in California. The ailing actor will receive the Icon Award at a tribute on January 13, 2011 as part of the festival's "Talking Pictures: The Contenders" series, which focuses on Oscar front-runners.
Festival organizers say the prize "honors a creative talent who, through the course of his career, has created a body of work which symbolizes the highest level of achievement in the motion picture art form." Douglas, who revealed earlier this year that he is being treated for throat cancer, is nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in this year's "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps".
Festival director Darryl MacDonald says, "We're thrilled to have the opportunity to honor Michael Douglas at a time when both his creative prowess and his contributions to world cinema have never been more evident - or more deserving of celebration. Simply put, he's an American treasure." The 22nd annual Palm Springs International Film Festival begins on January 6, 2011.

Christmas Has Come Early for 'Desperate Housewives' Star Teri Hatcher
Christmas has come early for "Desperate Housewives" star Teri Hatcher - she has reportedly landed her own U.S. TV comedy. Hatcher was recently given the green light for a new pilot series scheduled to broadcast in America next autumn.
The show, said to be developed as the "Untitled Teri Hatcher Pilot", will be produced by "Housewives" creator Marc Cherry. A source tells the National Enquirer, "Teri's absolutely thrilled. She got the good news on the final day of shooting Housewives before the holiday hiatus. It's going to be a dark comedy in the Housewives tradition."
Teri Hatcher was previously rumored to leave "Desperate Housewives" after the current season comes to an end. But, she quickly denied it, "There are not enough adjectives to describe how stupid, off base, and ridiculously untrue this is. Newspapers' should be accountable for this kind of irresponsible journalism and reckless fabrication of a story. What disturbs me the most is that one fan would consider for one second that I would 'quit' what has been one of the highlights of my career for which I am grateful on a daily basis."
'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' to Resume Performance
Broadway's beleaguered "Spider-Man" musical has been hit with another setback - a preview performance was cancelled mid-show on Monday, December 20 after an actor playing the superhero was injured on stage.
The much-delayed "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" finally began preview performances in November after months of problems and rigorous safety checks, but the opening show was marred by stops as stunts went wrong. Producers vowed to resolve all of the technical issues before the official opening, which was recently pushed back from January to February, but a horrendous onstage accident on Monday proved there are still problems to be fixed.
Audience members at the Foxwoods Theater gasped in horror as one of the actors playing the webslinger tumbled from a platform above the stage. The production was immediately halted and the unnamed star was taken to New York's Bellevue Hospital for treatment.
A spokesman for the show tells the New York Times' Arts Beat blog, "An actor sustained an injury at tonight's performance of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. He fell several feet from a platform approximately seven minutes before the end of the performance, and the show was stopped. All signs were good as he was taken to the hospital for observation. We will have more news shortly."
As a result, they canceled its Wednesday matinee to add safety precautions. A spokesman for the production, Rick Miramontez said the show would be safe enough to perform on Wednesday night after the new measures were put in place.
The accident marks the latest in a long line of injuries for the show's stars - actress Natalie Mendoza suffered concussion on the first night of previews when a rope broke and hit her on the head, and another Spider-Man stuntman Kevin Aubin broke both wrists during rehearsals in October.
The Latest Disaster for The 'Spider-Man' Musical
The latest disaster for the "Spider-Man" musical, which saw an actor seriously injured on-stage during a preview performance, has been blamed on "human error". The beleaguered Broadway show "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" has been blighted by a series of setbacks - previews finally began in November after months of problems and rigorous safety checks, but the opening show was halted throughout as stunts went wrong.
Producers then decided to push back the official opening until February to incorporate "new ideas", but another preview on Monday, December 20 ended in disaster as the show was cut short following a horrific accident. Stunt double Christopher Tierney was taken to New York's Bellevue Hospital for treatment after he tumbled from a platform above the stage. It was later revealed he had broken several ribs, with reports blaming the incident on snapped cables.
But following an investigation by the Actors' Equity Association, the real reason behind the accident was revealed to be an error on the stage crew's part. A statement from the organization reads, "Actors' Equity Association worked today with the Department of Labor, OSHA and the production to determine that the cause of the accident at last night's performance of Spiderman (sic) was, in fact, human error."
Tierney is the latest person to be injured during the run - actress Natalie Mendoza suffered concussion on the first night of previews when a rope broke and hit her on the head, and another "Spider-Man" stuntman, Kevin Aubin, broke both wrists during rehearsals in October.

'The Walking Dead'Can Quench Their Thirst of The New Season
Die hard fans of AMC's new acclaimed series "The Walking Dead" can quench their thirst of the new season with this featurette that the cable has just released. While it's general knowledge that the show is not returning for another chapter until October next year, producers and cast tide fans over with their perspective of what may happen after the explosive finale.
One thing that they emphasize is the fact that it is yet known what caused the outbreak. Co-producer Denise Huth said, "We need next season to answer all these questions". Robert Kirkman whose comic books are adapted into the series doesn't have the intention to end the story anytime soon nor does he have a plan to wrap it in a specific number of season, Huth revealed.
Showrunner Frank Darabont shared his vision, saying "I want the audience to feel uncertain when they tune in. My hope is that if we're lucky enough to be in a long run in a show like this, then we can make the stakes as high as we can as we go along."
Andrew Lincoln who plays the main hero, Rick Grimes, added, "Hopefully, you'll be happily surprised". Other than the cast and crew's takes on the new season, there is zero new footage and no slightest hint of what will happen after [Spoiler Alert] the group of survivors left the CDC quite devastated.
Nevertheless, more about season 2 is expected to be unveiled during the show's panel at 28th Annual William S. Paley Television Festival which takes place between March 4 and 18 next year.

His last episode was also packed with a salute from a variety of media personalities such as Ryan Seacrest and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
While Seacrest and Bill Maher came in person, most of the others bid their goodbye to King via satellite. This included President Barack Obama, former president Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, Regis Philbin, Katie Couric, Diane Sawyer, Brian Williams and Barbara Walters.

Then there was a performance of "The Best Is Yet to Come", again via satellite, by Tony Bennett as well as a few words from King's children and wife.
Wrapping up the show, King said his last words. "It's not very often in my life that I've been without words but...," he said before pausing. "I wanna thank everybody associated with this program. All of the people behind the scenes as I mentioned Wendy [Walker] and the staff ...everybody who makes this possible."
He continued later, "I don't know what to say except, to you, my audience, thank you. And instead of 'goodbye', how about 'so long'." The lights then faded out to King's iconic microphone before the set went completely dark.
Piers Morgan will replace King in January while King would still appear for CNN specials and several other projects.

USA Today Got Its Hand on The First Official Image of 'Fast Five'
USA Today has got its hand on the first official image of "Fast Five". Exposed on the shot are original actor in the film series Vin Diesel and new cast member Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. The bald and the boisterous are going head to head in the photo as the former wrestler portrays a cop on the trail of street racers portrayed by Vin, Paul Walker and Tyrese Gibson.
"One of the things I've always loved about the franchise - the reason I think it's been so successful over the years - is that they never stop trying to up the action," Dwayne praises the film. Meanwhile, Justin Lin, who has been directing the series since 2006 "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift", has different opinion on the franchise's strength, "I think what keeps it going is that it's not really about cars. I have to be honest: I'm not a big car guy. At the core, 'Fast and Furious' is about family and how to create them."
Still, Justin admits, "If you're going to do a 'Fast and Furious' movie, you've got to go bigger each time." He additionally gushes about Dwayne's involvement, saying "People thought it would be impossible to get Dwayne. But he didn't show up looking to cash a paycheck. That's pretty amazing, for a star like him to join the fifth part of a franchise. That says a lot about him and the fans."
This follow-up to "Fast and Furious" has a script written by Chris Morgan. Starring also Ludacris, "Fast Five" is filmed in Brazil, Puerto Rico and several locations in the U.S.
The upcoming action adventure movie is due April 29, 2011 Stateside after moved up from the old June 10, 2011 slot. The first trailer for "Fast Five" is scheduled to premiere on Tuesday, December 14 on Vin Diesel's official Facebook page.

'The Closer' Coming to an End
"The Closer" is no more after this upcoming season. TNT, on Friday, December 10, announced that its long-running crime drama will not return beyond the seventh season that airs next year. Production of those final 15 episodes is scheduled to begin next spring.
"It's impossible to fully express our appreciation to Kyra Sedgwick, series creator James Duff and all of the other talented people who brought The Closer to TNT viewers," said Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks. "The Closer was a pivotal series in setting a new course for TNT's original programming, while also serving as a prime example of the storytelling strength possible on cable television."
In return Sedgwick said, "I cannot fathom how difficult it will be to say goodbye to the incredible family we've created on The Closer. I will always be grateful to James Duff for his love and friendship, as well as for creating such a rich and complex character who I have loved living with year after year. Mike, Greer, Rick and all of our outstanding cast and crew are forever in my heart. I want to thank TNT and Warner Bros. Television, as well as the incredible fans of The Closer, for all of their unwavering support over the last seven years."
"The Closer" began in 2005 and has delivered Sedgwick a Golden Globe in 2007. Currently in its sixth year, the drama is averaging more than 8 million viewers weekly. While the number is good, it only pulls 1.0 rating in the adult demo, which doesn't look good for advertisers.

MTV Has Assigned One of Its Juggernauts
MTV has assigned one of its juggernauts to ring in its New Year's Eve special. "Jersey Shore" star Snooki will climb into a ball that is lowered into New York's Times Square as part of "MTV New Year's Bash".
Snooki is not the only "Jersey" cast to appear at the live event. The Situation would lead the crowd for a serious fist-pumping in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record. Meanwhile, DJ Pauly D would be the official DJ of the night.
Rapper Flo Rida is tapped to perform two songs while Whitney Cummings is one of the comedians who would give their unique take on the music, TV shows, Internet happenings, relationships and douche bags who made 2010 an unforgettable year, MTV said.
The hour-long show will be broadcast live from the MTV studios in Times Square with Cummings as the host. There will be additional reporting of the festivities down below from "The Seven" hosts, Kevin Manno and Julie Alexandria. Beside waiting for 2011's arrival, the crowd can expect a sneak peek of "Jersey Shore" season 3.
'Alien' Prequel Gets Heavenly Title
Ridley Scott's "Alien" prequel reportedly has a title that is far from resembling the original film. Per New York Magazine's Vulture, the project is called "Paradise" and two parts of the back-to-back film are not pushed back to 2013 and 2014 as recently rumored.
Noomi Rapace has been linked to the female lead role lately but formal offers have not gone out to actors because there's no working budget yet on the film. Insiders, however, have spilled the names of stars who could possibly join the movie.
Michael Fassbender is reportedly wanted for the part of an android named David, an earlier version of the Bishop 341-B character that Lance Henriksen famously played in 1986 "Aliens", though there is a little chance he takes the job because his representatives have sought an outrageous amount of money for the "300" star.
Another actor linked to "Alien" prequel is Michelle Yeoh. The Asian actress, who is involved in upcoming "Kung Fu Panda 2" as the voice cast of The Soothsayer, is reportedly eyed by Scott to tackle the role of Vickers, a forty-something, tough-but-sexy woman.
Other characters which could appear in the film are an older businessman along for the ride and Engineer 1, who will be played by a six-foot-five-inch actor, but will actually be entirely CGI like Gollum in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. There is no word on who will take these roles.
Ridley Scott, who made 1979 "Alien", will direct the prequel project and team up with Tony Scott to produce it. The helmer previously gushed the film will "be really tough, really nasty. It's the dark side of the moon."

The End of 'Walking Dead'
"The Walking Dead" signed off from the first season with a bang, literally, and a mysterious whisper. The December 5 episode started with [Spoilers Ahead] a flashback that redeems Shane in the viewers' thought. Turns out he did think that Rick was dead at the hospital but he concealed the room and ran for his own life anyway.
Back on the CDC, the survivors met Dr. Jenner and took time to treat themselves with hot shower and wine. Just when Shane's reputation went up a bit by the initial sympathy, he tried to rape Lori. Later, Jenner explained what TS-19 means and revealed that it was his scientist wife who volunteered herself to be bitten and then studied.
Then there came the bad news of CDC counting down for a big "decontamination". They got 30 minutes to leave the facility but some like Jacqui and Andrea chose to stay. But Dale was not giving up Andrea so easily, saying he wouldn't leave if she doesn't. In the end, it was Jacqui who kept Jenner in company.
Before they took off, Jenner whispered something to Rick. And then boom! Viewers are kept in the dark about what the doctor said to Rick and may only find out when the season 2 premieres next year. AMC still has not confirmed whether it's true or not that the new season starts October 2011. But producer Gale Ann Hurd stated that co-creator Frank Darabont and exec producer/comic book author Robert Kirkman would map out the second season in January.
Plus, there's still no sighting of Merle in the finale and perhaps it would be explained in the new season. Michael Rooker who plays the redneck said before the finale, "It it's really set up well for me to bounce back, and I'm looking forward to it."
Olivia Wilde and Jeff Bridges Appear in 'Tron Legacy' UK Premiere
Walt Disney Pictures is gearing up to the release of "Tron Legacy" and has sent the stars for promotional duty. On December 5, Olivia Wilde and Jeff Bridges premiered the movie across the pond at Empire Leicester Square in London, England.
Without lead actor Garrett Hedlund seen anywhere around them, the two cuddled on the blue carpet as if to warm each other on the freezing night. Joined by director Joseph Kosinski, they appeared in black ensembles with Wilde still showing some skin under a one-shouldered sequined Armani dress.
"She looks amazing, doesn't she?" Bridges said, praising his co-star while giving her a hug. The "Tron" actor who reprises his role as Kevin Flynn in the sequel went on dishing on the upcoming film. He stated, "They came up with one and I am thrilled with it. It's wonderful. I had heard the rumors for so long. It's a real ride."
"Glee" stars Amber Riley, Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz also jetted from the U.S. to U.K. to support the premiere. More celebrities like Hailee Steinfeld, Laura Whitmore and Alison Goldfrapp were also spotted among the attendees at the special screening.
"Tron Legacy" follows Sam Flynn as he investigates the disappearance of his father Kevin and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. The action sci-fi film is made in 3-D and will open wide Stateside on December 17.

The Future of Leslie Nielsen's Final Film Is in Doubt
The future of Leslie Nielsen's final film is in doubt because the animated movie's creator is still hunting for investors to finance the project's completion. The spoof movie legend, who passed away on Sunday, November 28 aged 84 following a short battle with pneumonia, voiced a character for low-budget venture "The Waterman Movie" last year.
However, the film's creator Bryan Waterman admits the project is far from ready, telling TMZ.com that a "great deal" of production needs to be completed. He is currently taking donations from sponsors in exchange for a "special thanks" at the end of the movie to be able to finance further work.
But Waterman insists the project will feature Nielsen when it is finally released, and on his website the animator remembers his time with the beloved star fondly. He writes, "There is no word greater than 'impossible', to describe the anomaly I was fortunate enough to be a part of. If only for a little while, I was friends with a super hero. From a fan, to a legend, you will be deeply missed."
Stephen Dorff Wants Jack Nicholson to Join His Comedy
Stephen Dorff is planning to star alongside his pal Jack Nicholson in a new comedy film, which he is writing himself. The actor tests his comic skills by playing a porn star in new movie "Born to Be a Star", which is produced by Adam Sandler's Happy Madison film company.
He is re-teaming with the funnyman's firm to bring his own comedy idea to the big screen, and although the project is in its early stages, Dorff has big ideas for his writing debut. He tells The Independent, "I have a comedy idea that I came up with that I'm doing with Adam Sandler's company that I want to do with Jack Nicholson, who's still a good friend of mine."
"It's a very funny comedy idea for me and him set in the South of France. We're not in script form yet but I wrote the treatment and they've already bought it so as soon as I get a break from working, I'll turn that into a script and I'll go and tell Jack."
And Dorff is adamant his friend Nicholson will sign up as his co-star as long as he is offered a big pay cheque, adding: "I'll get Sony to give him his $15 million and then we'll go and make the movie - because he likes money. Just the way I like money too."
